How to choose the right tool for the lathe

1. Type of turning tool
CNC lathe generally uses standard clamp indexable tool. The blade and body of the indexable tool have standards. The blade materials are cemented carbide, coated cemented carbide and high speed steel.
According to different functions, it can be divided into cylindrical cutter, external thread cutter, internal thread cutter, cutting cutter, hole processing cutter (including center hole drill, boring cutter, tap, etc.).
When the indexable tool is used to fix the non regrinding blade, it usually adopts the block structure of screw, screw pressing plate, screw pin or wedge.
2. Select blade material
There are two kinds of tools commonly used for turning high speed steel and cemented carbide.
High speed steel is usually a blank material, its toughness is better than cemented carbide, and its hardness, wear resistance and red hardness are worse than cemented carbide. It is not suitable for cutting materials with higher hardness and high speed cutting. High speed steel cutting tools need to be sharpened by the manufacturer before use, and the sharpening is convenient, which is suitable for all kinds of non-standard cutting tools with special needs.
Cemented carbide inserts have excellent cutting performance and are widely used in NC turning. Cemented carbide inserts have standard specification series, and the specific technical parameters and cutting performance are provided by the tool manufacturer.
According to the international standard (ISO), cemented carbide inserts are divided into three categories: p-steel, m-stainless steel and k-cast iron based on the hardness and bending strength of cemented carbide. The numbers of 01, 05, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 are added after the codes of K, P and m for subdivision. Generally, the smaller the number is, the higher the hardness is, but the lower the toughness is; conversely, the larger the number is, the higher the toughness is, but the lower the hardness is.
In addition, there are tool materials with hardness and wear resistance higher than cemented carbide, such as ceramics, cubic boron nitride and diamond.
Lathe machine maintenance and adjustment
When using the lathe machine, following instruction should be observed:
1)The oil lever in all oil tanks should always be maintained on the center of oil gauge; otherwise either ineffective lubrication or overheating with loss in power will occur.
2)All oiling points should be lubricated with pure oil at regular intervals.
3)Frequently inspect the oil flow through sight glass ensuring proper lubrication of the headstock and feed box.
4)Check and adjust the tension of motor belts at regular intervals.
5)Before daily operation, run the main motor idle for one minute, and then operate all parts of the lathe without load, fill oil into the oil bath of the saddle.
6)With the spindle running at high speed, sudden change of the speed id not allowed.
7)The leadscrew is used for thread only. Never use it for turning operation.
8)When applying steady rest or follower rest, contact surface of rest should be lubricated.
Adjustment
1). Spindle adjustment
Excessive clearance in spindle bearing causes “working finishing not smooth” The spindle swivel accuracy includes radial run-out and axial run-out. Radial run-out is guaranteed by double row roller bearing at the front of spindle and single row radial thrust ball bearing at the rear of spindle while axial run-out is guaranteed by single row thrust ball bearing at the rear of spindle. Check method is according to item 5 and 8 in the test certificate. If the accuracy is not up to what is asked, in most cases. Method is the following: adjust the nut on spindle for removing clearance in spindle bearing.And lock one nut after adjustment. If the radial run-out is not up to what is asked yet adjust rear bearing by some method ad described above. After the adjustment is made, run the spindle idle at high speed for an hour and observe that bearing temperature should not exceed 70℃. If it exceeds, first loosen locks screws on set nuts, then the nuts should be slightly loosed, after the adjustment, retighten the lock screws.
2). Chain Wheel Adjustment
The change of spindle speeds is controlled by levers at the front of the headstock. Control levers can shift slide gears through the chain wheel mechanism obtaining different gear conditions. If the actual spindle speed is not equal to its relative speed being engraved on the spindle speed indicating dial should make the adjustment of the chain wheel mechanism. First loosen the screw, turn the eccentric shaft make the chain until the spindle speed change pointer is set to the desired position, then, tighten the screw to locate the shaft through steel balls.
3). Carriage Adjustment
Clearance between cross slide and guideways and that between compound rest slide and guideways are adjusted by gibs through screw respectively. In fact of the backlash of cross slide lead screw resulting from wear of adjustable nuts, loosen the screw on the nuts and draw up wedge with the screw until the backlash is eliminated. Then tighten the screw.
4). Motor Belt Tension Adjustment
The main drive motor is mounted in the lathe leg. Dismantle the cover at the front of the lathe leg, the belt tension can be adjusted by changing the inclination of the motor base plate through nuts. The belt tension of the motor depends on the distance between the center of the motor pulley and that of the pulley of the headstock.
